Hello I'm interested in buying a 1/3rd scale piper cub from a friend. I'm new to large scale and need advise on engine choice. The cub had a OS 2.40 nitro 4 cylinder engine in it previous. I'm looking at putting a Zenoah G62 in it. Will i have to put a new mounting plate in due to different motors and size? I'm getting the plane at a really good price minus motor. If it will need work to change plate out may not invest in it. So any help is much appreciated from anyone.

No you don't need to replace firewall. But you should plug the holes. (I usually do). Its an easy job.

Ok thanks, just didn't know if I get it will I be over my head in modifications and setup.

I have an old 1/4 scale H9 scale PA18 super cub w/ G26 and it flies reasonably well. Wont go vertical but plenty of power for goofing off. I'm putting a Saito FG30 in a 1/4 H9 J3 Cub so it sounds better (and 2x longer flight time)

Do note that big Cubs are not the easiest things to take off. I have other (mostly overpowered) giant scale but still knew the maiden of the PA18 would be tricky. At about 2 seconds it was my shortest flight ever and required a wingtip and firewall repair. Those long wings have LOTS of momentum for the short coupled rudder to keep in line to prevent a ground loop. There is a good period of time between having to get the tail up (to keep the wing AoA down so it doesn't lift off WELL before its ready) and it actually having enough airspeed to work well. Its very much like the real thing and keeps you on your toes. Get your friend to help/buddybox you on takeoff until you are comfortable with it. Landing is easier but still not as simple as other planes. Lots of rudder work needed. Enjoy!

yes. use dowels. I drill the hole to the closest size of the dowel then 30 minute epoxy it in.
then thin out epoxy with alcohol and brush it over fire wall to fuel proof.

Ok thanks this helps out a lot, I feel pretty confident now about making the move. I will keep the flying tips in mind as well, I appreciate the insight. I will be making this my winter project for next year. I have a couple of piper's already with .91 4-strokes in them and yes I'm still learning a lot about taking off every day I fly.
