Re: Who using A123 batteries?
I'm curious how you are charging your A123's.... through the port on JR switchjacks? Dean's connectors? I'm getting some batteries from Fromeco that will have JR leads to connect to the switches, and a second Dean's lead for charging. This should reduce the charge time.

Re: Who using A123 batteries?
when i build a pack i put a deans connector and a jr connector on every pack. the deans plugs into the powerbox and the other jr is my charging connector. i never take a pack out of the plane to charge it but, i make my leads so that while iam putting the plane togeather i charge it while the canopy is not on. with my cellpro 4s. if you put 1 jr connector on and want to charge through the switch and balance you can do so but, you must cut the orange wire lead before it plugs into the receiver. the lead from the switch to the receiver. get it?? i use 2 well 3 packs per plane. 2 for the receiver and 1 for the ignition. 1 charge in the am will last all day no problem what so ever. also i allways balance charge them because that will give the packs the longest useable time factor. you should be able to get apx 2000 charge cycles on a true A123. cant get that on ANY lipo and or nimi or nicad, or li-on. but if you dont want to balance cycle every charge, i personaly would balance charge at least 1 time per month. and the charge time with a jr connector isnt any longer than a deans connector. most chargers wont go past 4 amps anyway. but there are some that will. and if yours is one that will i would not charge it through a jr plug i will be happy to show a pic of my packs if anyone is interested in seeing how easy this is to do. and way cheaper than buying made up sets

What batteries did he have? And what were the details?

Re: Who using A123 batteries?
1320 2s tp and the details are it blew up mid charge. I know the a123 dont really catch fire but i dont have 600 for a new plane and whatever else would die. its easy enough to pull a velcro strap off the battery and put it on the table to charge.

Yea, I gotta agree with you on that.

Back when they were new to R/C good ole Dick Hanson out in Utah (I believe) even drove a nail through one to see if it would go poof.....nada. Just keep your wiring in good order and they will not smoke. Enjoy your batteries, lots of guys are.

Re: Who using A123 batteries?
I use much the same set up that you have described except that I fly much smaller planes using a 2S 2300 mah ready built pack with JR connectors and the A123 switch sold by Electrodynamics. This gives me a balancing lead with a JR connector and the battery lead JR connector which both provide power during flight through the switch and then dual leads from the switch to the receiver, which provides at least twice the current potential as compared to a single lead system. When the switch is turned off I can then charge through the built in charge connection on the switch (balanced charge). This system significantly reduces low voltage transients caused by high current transients and uses only one battery and one switch. I plan to add an Ignition Battery Elmininator and just use on pack for both the receiver and the ignition.
Regardless of my approach, I am ready to learn how you build your packs from single cells and how you connect them -- or anything else you are willing to teach. Pictures would be most helpful and my soldering skills are only slightly better than my singing. Howard |

Re: Who using A123 batteries?
no problem i can post pics but i dont have a video camera. but you will get the idea. its very simple to do. the only thing you need to have that you might not have right now is a good soldering station. this means a iron NOT a GUN i will make a pack to show this weekend. i have to work satrday but sunday i will show you how to do it. its the easyest thing you can do in the rc world by yourself..
