I don;t think anyone at Futaba wanted this getting out, but since no one will see this I'll let you in on a corprate secret. I am bound by contract to always wear my special, custom made, silk orange and black Futaba "Y" fronts. Not to create any problems, but when you fly in silk Futaba boxers...you really can feel the differance!
Oh...did I just say that?
When performing I bet that gives a whole new meaning to "I sh*t my pants!"

Blah, blah blah. The "Airshow" in question was Frank Noll Jr. flying a Great Planes 35% Cap 580 in Bill CLine's back yard. Matt was filming . Nice try Matty boy.

No Flaming here!!

I actually think it is a practice based on convenience... the fuselages are a tube structure... and it is the most convenient place to put it... that.. or underneath...
I don't think the full size planes go thru iterations like models... so making subtle changes is not as simple... add to that getting it certified... changing after certification pro'ly requires as much paperwork as the plane weighs...

That was shot at the Wilmington Airhsow this year. Wind was on crowd about 30 mph. That was my "short show" as well. I just wish they had posted my formation flight with Mike Mancuso.
Thanks for posting that. Who ever shot the video did a nice job.
I saw that show at the Wilmington Airport. It was impressive, but not quite as awesome as the show that he did in Toughkenomon (sp?) earlier that summer. That show left me completely inspired. My son now calls me a Matt Chapman groupie.

Re: Our own Matt Chapman

Mithrandir,

The CAP fuse is actually built like a model, wooden frame, no tubes. You are most likely correct in that the location is a matter of ease of mounting on said wooden box fuse frame. Forward location gets the elevators out of the way of the rudder. Full size airplanes DO go through many itterations especially if experimental. The rate of change is slower than with models as it takes longer to make the changes.

Pilot---smylot.....Pilots are easy to find.....Getting help to wet sand is the hard part of airplane building......

Re: Our own Matt Chapman

This just in!
Mancuso will not be attending the Joe Nall. So, no Extra for Biff to get the living sh&% beat out of him with me. I was under the impression that FG was going to sponsor Mike, but that has not happend. I think Biff whimped out under the pressure knowing he was gong to get slammed and lose face in front of his buddies. So, it will just be me at the Nall on W, T & F... and I was moved out out of the halftime show at noon and will be flying at 5pm each day. This will be great for video and photos.....if I'm sill awake....
I'll be doing my new "rolling harrier take off"

Yup, Mancuso lost the toss! I got the easy job, just fly up-side-down! Mancuso had to do all the work!
It's very interesting hanging by your straps and seeing another airplane prop coming into view a few feet away.

Does this make anyone want to go out and buy a GP 580 Cap like it does me? My wife loves that plane and if she gets a look at the video they will be another project here to build! I just wish she would learn to fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Our own Matt Chapman

for those non slpat lovers out there, the 580 is in the paint shop now getting some changes! Still a few of them, but nothing like the original.
Stand by for Pix in the next couple weeks.
