Wowzer! This weekend we ran the new GP 178cc motors. I am really impressed with the throttle response. Power is on tap right through the throttle range making it electric like in response. Smooth and crisp. A real game changer for the 3d pilot but also for IMAC as the power comes in and out so smoothly through the range. I now have 12 flights on mine with close on 20l though it. Mine is running a Falcon Carbon 30x13 but I will change to a Falcon Carbon 31x12 and the other is on a Falcon carbon 30x12x3 blade.

We'll tacho soon as we have them dialled in with a few more litres through them.

Excuse my ignorance!
Is there any difference between GP 178 EVO and GP 178?

There is only 1 version of the GP 178, no Evo designation anymore, they are all share the Evo design.
Cheers!

Glad to know there are good reviews about GP 178.
I am looking for a replacement for MVVS 175 NP, because it seems these engines will not be available any more.

Hi
What do you mean, will not be available any more?

It makes one wonder if they are still that way or if yours was a stand alone problem child. current ones are doing fine I imagine or else the 178 wouldn't have gotten the great press...

From what I understand, Mr. Kotrbaty step down as MVVS CEO and it seems this will lead to a diminish / delay / stop production of big gas engines.
But let's hope it will not be the case and MVVS will rise again to it's past glory.

Took some RPM readings for the GP's I got from Joe Lewis at Aviatorplus over the past month:

All numbers on the ground - 2nd flight (warm engine)
Outside temp ~ 80-85F
900 F ASL
Humidity: ~ 50-70%
H9 - Micro Digital Tachometer
Stock mufflers

Carf Extra 330LX 118"- Falcon 31X12 @ 6280
H9 Sukhoi SU226MM 122" - Falcon 31X12 @ 6300

Here's a vid with some smoke in the night with the GP178. (the GP stock muffler smoke fluid atomization is very good)

IMHO - the best engine and plane in the 40% class!

CARF Extra 330LX 120" night flight. (5 min 31 sec)

Thx Joe Lewis.

GP178 ENGINE ISSUES. Bad Engine. (1 min 33 sec)

Great Power 178 GP178 Engine Tilloston Carburetor.

In this video you can see the reed valves, one of them not closing completely, than the engine has 3 run ups, first of them, the engine suffers to gain RPMs when set full power, the engine sags, almost die and gain RPM. After Full throttle the engine accept slow down deceleration on second try things seems ok but in the third try, the engine sits at a higher RPM and die.

Considerations:
*Low Needle / High Needle 2 turns, can't run more than 3400 RPMs.
*I flew this engine last weekend, 4 flights, no issues unless some oil leaks.
*the LH spark pulg is light brown colored, the RH spark plug seems a bit flooded (dark oil residue).
*Ignition battery LiFe Gens Ace 2100mAh

Issues: After 4 flights with no issues unless some oil leaks on spark plug gasket and cylinder bolts, i tighten up a bit more my LH Spark Plug and the 4 cylinders bolts. After this adjustment, today, i ran the engine and the engine suddenly can't run more than 3400 RPMs and then suddenly quits.

I tried to open a bit more the low needle end, no results. After some time the engine reacts obtaining RPMs when I pump the throttle and increase acceleration, than, reaching 5650RPMs (Biela 29x12x3 prop) but, after some seconds on full throttle, if I slow down the Throttle to Idle, the Idle sits at 2400RPM; (Previous settings of the Idle was 1500 RPM) so, after full throttle and slowing down the stick the engine gains 1000 RPM, then the engine keeps obtaining power (no stick movement) ans than the engine suddenly quits again.

After opening the Low Needle End to 3 1/2 turns and Hi to 2 1/2, the engine gets better but still can't be a stable engine.

Any Ideas?

For IMAC I found the 30-14-2 Falcon and a set of Slimline pipes is really strong

I strongly urge you to contact Aviator Plus RC. He will take care of you. Or send FLYMAN_022 a PM. That is Joe Lewis. He is the US Service Center.

Interesting read...I have 2 of the 178s and found on both of them, the needles were set
way too rich. After some adjustments (more than 1/2 turn) they both are flawless..
