foam Vs Built up on 40% ARF
Cardens have foam core wings.
Aerotech has foam core wings When Tony bought out the Von Extra Line and Made it Dalton his first change was foam core wings. It has been stated that several 40% arf manufactures possibly have had problems with built up wings. The new QQ Yaks have Built up wings Wildhare 41% has foam core wings 42% AW QB Extra 260 has built up wings. I heard from a reliable source that a majior player in the root cause of failures in some 42% AW wings is the fact that the wings were moved slightly forward to enhance aerobatic performance, When the wings were moved forward the wing tube was no longer located between the main spars. I believe AW is sending out new wings(built up) to everyone who has a 42% wether the customer has has a problem or not. This is good Customer service. I have heard Great Things about how the AW 42% 260 flies. I guess what I am saying is, should AW go to a foam core wing and suffer a very small weight penality but gain a huge amount of strength, or should they try and fix the built up wings on the next production run? Personally I would prefer a Foam core Wing on Version 2. Should QQ Consider foam core on his 120" Yaks Where did the Poll button GO? |

Just to clear things up the 42% wings have been redesighned and will be as strong as ever. Wood wings can be just as strong as foam wings and we have taken the steps to make them more than strong enough.

That is great news, I have a set of 42% Von Extra built up wings in my shed that I am afraid to use. I had a CMP 72" Katana with built up wings that broke in flight, it was because the balsa sheer webing was the wrong direction. Do you get to choose built up or wood or does it depend only on what factory Builds the planes? I would love to see built up wings of the future be as strong as foam core, great job! |

We can chooses most of the time. The other issue we sometimes see with the foam wings are that they have a higher chance of not being built strait due to them warping as they change from climate to climate.

You are correct. Were will be tying the tube, spars, and shear webbing all into eachother like they were on the prototypes. We made this fix on my wings here at the shop and have had great success! And yes everyone will be getting new wings and we have contacted everyone who has the plane and have told them not to fly until the new wings arrive. |
