OMG, I MUST SUBMIT AN ADDENDUM TO MY LAST POST. i was wrong about this engine, and all my failures were due to user error.
let me tell you what happened. this motor was intitially in a seagull yak. the plane fell apart on flight #4. i removed the motor, removed the stock muffler, and then installed it in a Great Planes Yak with a perry pump and a Pitts muffler. i had tapped the crankcase backplate for the pressure fitting that went to the perry pump. i had about 10 flights with the perry pump, and i could never get much power out of this engine. so then i removed the perry pump connections, and connected the fuel clunk directly to the carb, and connected the exhaust pressure to the vent of the fuel tank. so for another 10 flight, could not get power from her. i could get maybe 6800 rpm, she idled great, but at TWO, she flew like she was lean, but with me opening needle open 3 turns out. then i tried using different props, initially 20 x 12, could not get over 5500 rpm, then 20 x10, then 20 x 6, nothing. finally, i used an 18 x 8, and it was best flight ever for her, but she would only turn 7200 rpm, and even then, engine did not sound like she was running lean. this morning, a light bulb went on. i was putting my finger on the carb opening and then slowly turning prop, and i noticed it would not draw fuel from tank??? HMMMMM, i thought. it must be that tap on back of crankcase plate, it is still open!!!
so then i closed this line, and took her to fly
OMG, this engine is a monster. i started out rich, with an 18 x 8 prop, it was reading 9000 rpm. flew her, and i thought maybe she was too fast, but still sounded too rich, so i closed needle to about 1 1/4 turns out, and then it read 12,000 rpm, she was screaming. flew her, and way way too fast. i was mostly flying 1/2 throttle to 1/4 throttle.

so i grounded her, and now i will go back up to the 20 x 10 prop to see if i can get about 7000 to 8000 rpm. then she will fly better i believe.

I have four of them and after very carefully setting them up paying close attention to the low/midrange to get the transition perfect, they are THE most reliable engines I have ever used. I have them in all of my WW1 warbirds and they just run perfectly.
