Build Log
4th of July Special from Wowplanes

Hello guys,

Hope all my American friends had a wonderful 4th of July. I certianly did.

I had an idea to design something special for Independence Day and maiden it on July 4th. Well I ran out of time and it was not quite ready to fly, but it was good enough for a show & tell. So I took it to the club picnic on July 4th and here is a picture.

It is 102" span and is an original design. I wanted to make something big, easy to build, easy to fly, streamlined and low drag, and here is what came out.

I went about it somewhat differently this time. I had no idea of the final shape so I first built the wing, then tried several shapes for the fuselage in CAD until I liked one. I did the same for the tail.

The paint job is not finished yet. I think I will add some blue to the H.Stab and some design and color to the V-Stab too.

Would you like to see a build thread?

The inspiration for this baby came from the recent 4th of July Independence Day. My plan was to maiden her on the 4th, but I simply ran out of time. However, I got her in shape for a show & tell, and picture taking, at our club's 4th of July picnic.

I started without any idea how the plane would turn out. I have always wanted to do an "original", I wanted something big, something that would look impressive in flight, something sleek and aerodynamic with low drag, something that would be aerobatic, something that would not be too complex to build.

One thing I learned very early, is that, an original is much more difficult to design as compared to a scale model. I had no 3-views, no pictures, and no truckloads of documention to go by. Everything had to be imagined and created from thin air. Of course I did use aeronautical engineering principles to arrive at the proportions of the model, and ensure that she will be a good flyer.

I started by building a constant chord wing, no dihedral, semi-symetrical airfoil, psuedo-Fowler flaps, and ailerons. The servos and pushrods were to be concealed. The wing span ended up at 102"

Here are some pictures of the build sequence.

I continued with building the wing. A large 102" span wing built as a one piece may be more than the average car or van can handle. There is no reason why it could not be built as a two piece wing. The mid wing can be permanently glued into the fuselage and the outter panels slid over carbon fiber or aluminum tube with dowels for registration. I have a van with a 12 ft bed, so I did not feel it necessary.

Well, it is time to start building the fuselage. It comes in 4 parts, 3 of which make the fuselage and the 4th one makes the cowl.

I continued with building the fuselage. Some of the pictures are not in sequence and were taken after the final paint, but I hope you will get the idea.

I forgot to show how the wing is mounted to the fuselage. This should be done before the LSII and final painting stage. Here is build sequence for mounting the wing.
