Large system connectors

Ive just acquired a 95" 3dhs extra 330sc-e the current owner used some Amass 7mm anti spark connectors im not familiar with. The plane has a xpower 60cc and castle hv160 esc. I plan to run it 12s but all my 6s batts have ec5 connectors. Will these handle the load or am i creating a current choke with them? Also ive never had connecting with a little spark cause an issue is this something I should worry with on a system of this size.

EC5s will be fine. 7MM is overkill. I ran 6mm when I was running 10S2P fast electric boats that pulled above 300 amps.

Thanks in the past ive always run gassers over 25% so ive little experience with planes this size in electric. Its a whole other animal from my 75 edge.

You will love flying it, Scooby. I have been flying mine for about 6 months using the connecters as suggested. The only thing I have done is put an AS150 anti spark connector on the power pack leads. As my ESC an OPTO type I run the RX off a separate battery with a HV switch. She is a beauty.

Nice cant wait to pick it up on Friday should be able to fly on sunday
Ill be using an ar12310t rx with 2 2550 batts for rx and servos and two 5200 mah 6s graphenes for for flight power.

What motor and prop are you running for best 3d performance

Don't worry, connectors only care about current, not about voltage. Higher voltages result in sparks of course.

Older version of that page, contains some other connectors

Excellent site, do have a look at the controller, motor, charger, power supply, battery etc. tests.

BTW - this is from the Horizon website. They state 120 amps continuous on the EC5, which will be fine for your application. Not sure what packs you plan to use, but for instance a 6,000 mAh pack will be flat after 3 minutes at 120 amp load. Meaning you will not be pulling near that except on long uplines and statically if you run it full on while holding it on the ground.

Your wires and pack C rating will have a greater effect then will the amp rating of the connector in your installation.

Yeah i saw that 120 continuous and 150 burst.
I have several sets of packs most of my planes are 6s or 12s
I have Zeee power graphene 5200 80c
Gens ace 4500 60c
And gens ace 3300 45c ( for my 75" edge 12s) these would be short flight times though on the 95. The 4500 packs are significantly lighter than the graphenes but the graphenes hold voltage much more stable keep lower temps and recharge quicker.

"What motor and prop are you running for best 3d performance"

I am using a Dualsky GA6000.8 with Dualsky HV 130A OPTO ESC
The servos I am using are Macgregor HV all rated at 31 torque at 7.2v.
The RX pack is a 3.6A 2S Lipo which hardly uses any juice after a four flight session. The power is provided by 12S setup using 2x 5A 6S Lipos, although I also use 12S 6A lipos in series. I am using a 24x8 prop although for serious 3D you will need something bigger.

All rated around 45C- 70C, forgot to mention, although these numbers are a bit tenuous!

Iím using the GA6000.8 and a Esprit Elite 165hv ESC with a Mezjlik 24x10 EL prop on my 95 Extra ( a24x10 PJN would be great as well). Iím using the same motor/esc on the heavier 91 Laser with a 25x10 Falcon electric wood prop (6,500 watts of fun on the Laser).

You should worry, 12s will give you +50volt.

But, on the other hand ...

... "The spark is your friend"CastleCreations).

No spark, then input caps are dead and rest of controller will soon follow (due to 8, 16 or 32kHz voltage spikes higher than batteryvoltage). Preferably taking plane down with it

On the other hand, too big a spark is bad for connectors. Not to mention your nerves.
Solution: move the spark to a cheap extra sacrificial connector.
The extra/very thin wire will reduce current, no need for resistor, or choose resistor small enough to reduce spark but still visible/audible. You'll still hear a (weaker) spark as an ok signal/indication.
