They work very well and don't damage your prop. I don't leave him without them. NO way I'll start a gasser by hand

I built some years ago as well, but mine does not use the rolling technique. I sort of like the drag mine has and with the covering material I chose it does not mark the prop up. I am looking forward to comparing them especially once I learn the technique to the rolling stick. I can see it working provided one learn exactly how to use it.

If a lot of folks can use them it certainly should help folks not getting their hands up in the props and save some damage. That alone is a good thing.

Mine started life as a sawn off broom stick with two old mountain bike grips on either end. the soft rubber on the starter side didn't damage the prop but it wore out quickly. I then replaced it with a steel tube inside with a ODI soft lock on grip with the lock on ends clamping bearings running on tubing from an old go-kart chassis that had gone soft and cracked - useless for racing and dangerous at the best of times . the grip end remains an old soft silicone slip on MTB grip from ESI.

I'm refining the design further with V3. May still commercialise. Silicone tape also makes for a nice alternative to the rolling element

You had done much more than I had. Mine was made from an Oak dowel and then I turned down one part of the oak and fitted a type of clear water tubing (I think it was for water) that was internally braided over it. This tubing was amazingly strong and would not as much as mar the prop, which I did not expect! I don't even recall what I had originally bought the tubing for. I think I had maybe 5 dollars in it.

Worked good because it did give you a slight drag although nothing actually rolled on it. It would be cool if you could set up the rolling resistance as I think the rolling can feel too free - if that makes sense.

I got lazy though and instead of dragging it out every time to start my engines, I just hand start. I will have to dig it up and re-visit the concept.

I found a lint roller for clothing at a Target. Its got a sticky coating on the roller to allow the lint to be removed from your clothes. That should work very well with gripping the prop a little better
