MIG 3 1/4 scale

Well, I thought I might post a picture of a nice MIG 3 warbird that I am currently building for a customer. This is a really nice airplane, might build another one for myself. I will post pictures as I go along (if I do not forget).

Love Mig 3's. Not many models do them justice.

Nice looking planes! Finally a warbird that has a long enough nose to be easy to balance.

Yes it is a roamin research with some of my own modifications. I made a split wing instead of a one piece, and wing mounted servos for ailerons and flaps.

Working on scale details on fuselage and building new foam core sheeted and glassed wings, with a center wing section and outer wing panels. The original design was a 2 piece wing, and I was not happy with it. Also after installing the retracts it seemed heavy, so I am doing that part completely new. While rebuilding it, I plan to make a mold of the fuselage for future projects. removable horizontal stabs.

Did you fly it with the original wing?

Are you going to use a spar tube in the 3 piece version?

I went to a local blueprint service shop today and had the Roman Research 101" plans reduced to 83% so it would fit a ESM Mig-3 fuselage. The ESM is an 80" airframe and my new RR 83% plans produced an 84" wing. The extra 4" I don't think will hurt any thing.

I'm going to build it as a 3 piece wing. It only makes sense to do that. I'm thinking of using one CF spar located at that aft center set of spars so it wouldn't interfere with retracts. Also, use one maybe two anti-rotation pins and flap and aileron servos in the outer wing panels.

What did you use for sheeting?

I'm working on my materials list for the wing.

I did not fly it with the original wing design and configuration, as it was too heavy with the retracts installed. Originally the Roman Research plans show no retracts, so a massive modification was needed to fit them into the wing. I will definitely build a 3 piece wing, that is connected with wing tubes, and anti rotation pins.

I normally go always with 3/32 on sheeting, as this will give you some room to sand smooth. Are you going to glass or cover the wings?

Are you going with fixed landing gear to save weight? I'm not sure what the weight difference is between air vs mechanical/servo vs electric retracts.

This wing looks strong and heavy with:
6 - 1/4" square hardwood spars
4 - 1/4" x 1/2" hardwood spars
14 - 1/8" ply ribs
and solid balsa wing tips.

I should be able to eliminate 2 ribs on each side with an 84" version and I may go with just one set of 1/4" x 1/2" hardwood spars that should probably be enough.

I'm not sure about the covering, haven't got that far yet.

I have electrical retracts that I am going to use on that plane. I think there's no really big weight difference between air or electric. The built up wings just have to be light, and for that very reason, I am going foam core, and make it as light as possible before sheeting and glassing. That should compensate for the retracts weight. On the original wing tips I did not even use solid there. The wings might be alright just for fixed landing gear, but those retracts, made a big difference in weight. I might just finish and keep them as spare wings, but with fixed landing gear. Maybe I can shave off some weight on the landing gears by using carbon fiber for the mounting part instead the heavy steel. I need to do some brain storming on that one.

Use your own judgment on your wings, how you want to build them.

Why don't you try to go with foam core wings? Easy and quick, and if you do it right, probably lighter than all that wood in a wing, unless you make a build up wing and eliminate the full sheeting of the wing, just leading, trailing and cap strip, cover done. This would be light enough. If you want to fully sheet the wing and glass it, go with foam core.
