Actually, you want the top and bottom fiber of wood to be undisturbed. A rod or tube under vertical bending stress goes through tension and compression as mentioned. However, when bent (down), upper most fiber carries most tensile stress as it undergoes most stretch and lower most fiber goes most negative stress (reduction in length). The stress distribution is linearly distributed vertically and zero stress at neutral axis (part that carries no stress due to no tension and no compression). The holes must be lined up horizontally not vertically.

A good example of above is structural beam ( called I beam as it resembles ) has most meat on upper most and lower most surfaces to maximize moment of inertia vertically. At the same time you will see relatively thin web between the two faces to act as a spacer. Sometimes there will be big holes cut in the web to further reduce mass in center as it simply act as a dead weight.

hey lol, I flew the plane with my custom wingtube and it flew really good, I cant feel the diference on the maneuvers except the rolling harrier, it seems to need more trottle to keep the nose up, but all the other is the same thing. jeje.
