I read in another thread if you're using Life Batts with this new ignition it can cause kickbacks. You could always get a RCEXL ignition unit to replace the EME one if you're set on using Life. That's what I'm doing as well

If one has to spend an additional $50-60 to buy an ignition for an EME that runs on reasonable voltage in order to support LiFe or A123's, then the EME starts to become less of an attractive value proposition. MileHigh should offer the engines with a choice of ignitions. ValleyView used to do this if people didn't care for the RCGF ignitions, and would ship it with RCExcel if the buyer preferred.

I would've went with the lower voltage ign if I had the choice. I'm running Life 6.6 for radio to servos. But overall i wished i had bought another engine instead.

Does your ign look like the below (Naturally with a different sticker) if so this is the new current style unit.

This Ign unit is used by EME,DJ & GP Twin engines.

It is fine from 6.6V & up, The Previous version to this unit was a kickback monster at voltage below 7V. as reported by the Gp engine users

From a few of the Dj144 users the 6.v is working fine.

You do have the option of a Li-ion @ 7.4v as well

Looks a little different, Its flat on the hump by the look of it.

There will be no harm in trying it at 6.6V, And im sure it will run fine and the vendor has approved this,
Eme may just need to update there sticker.

Im not sure how i feel about these black box units that are getting around, we seam to be having a few faulty ones or Hard to start, Kick backs etc from them.

But once the Rcexcl is used solves the issues.

So dont know yet. Ive got one with my 144 GTB , And hope the Ignition is a happy little one

That ignition does in fact look a bit different from the ignitions on my GP engines. The hump is flat and the box is longer looking as well. Not sure what this means?

Here is a GP61/38/88 Unit , So same as the the OP's EME one,

So the Single cylinder model Is a Different design/Make than the Twins cylinder version.

I'm working a lot this coming week, but I'll put my new EME 60 on the test stand next week and first run it with OEM ignition and 2 cell lipo. Then try 2 cell LiFe. After that I'll try switching to RCEXL ignition. Unless someone else beats me to it I will post my results.

I think you will have fine results on the 6.6V Life, But if it kicks back or becomes a pain, Try the 7.4v and see if you get a different result.

Some more info, Via the GP61 manual it advises to keep the voltage over 6.6v at all time under load,

So the Life will work find but you might find that your spark might start to degrade once the battery gets closer to flat, So just dont let it get below about 20-25% of the capacity and you should be right else it might missfire or run a bit rough.

This could be why the say the 7 volts Plus as it allows for some voltage drop.

Any way look forward to your results

I was in the same boat as you.

Dont use a glove, use a paint roller or the rolling chicken stick thing. At 6.6v the engine will run fine once you get it started. It will kick back, HARD, when you start it and it will hurt when it hits you even though a glove.

What I do now is
Ignition off
3/4 to Full Throttle
choke on
Rock the prop back and forth really hard by the spinner about 10 to 15 times
Then turn the ignition on just two or three clicks above idle.
Choke off and flip it with the paint roller hard.
It usually starts right up first flip without kicking back.

If you don't want to use LiPo, the alternate choice would be A123 Batteries. They have the same voltage output as Lipos.

As for the ignition, the attached link is my ARS300 with an EME120 with the new black box ignition. Like some posts here, I was worried about the engine buting my fingers, but with 7.2 volts running through the Tech Aero HV ibec, the engine was as docile and predictable as all EME engines with RCEXL ignitions.

The only thing I did, prior to starting the engine is to setup the needles to 1.25H and 1.5L and tweekex from there. From the Factory, it came with 1turn on high and thats too lean IMHO.

Here is the vid.
Eme120 with JMB headers and TRC60L (long) canisters.

Note, replace [brack] with Book.

that is same ignition that comes with the dla 116 that i put on my 110 yak. at the time i had pull my tec aero, replaced it with an electro dynamics fiber optic kill switch that i had in the tool box, and a lipo. tec aero now makes a hv one. and if you don't want lipos you could go with a fromeco relion, they are the same voltage.

I wonder a bit about the kickback if you use Life/a123's. I have 3 month old EME 35 and started with Life on ignition. I was getting some kickback on starting. Use a paint roller so no real problem. But as an experiment, I switched over to lipo. Made no difference. So went back to Life...
