Picture would be nice. Maybe the cowl is on a ring mount and the bolts are inside?

That sure looks like the airplane that was on FG some years back that appeared in a thread about a ZDZ engine that had a split case. Anybody remember that? If it belonged to that guy I wouldn't be at all surprised about the cowl being glued on.

That's a hard one to diagnose. Looks like there was originally a cowl ring that bolted to the fuselage, but apparently was removed(crash damage?) and the cowl glued on for a quick fix. The piano hinges are also interesting.

Yep.... piece of work it seemed. His ranting was off the hook over a ZDZ engine, that was apparently in that plane at one time.

He'd also listed that plane off and on for 3yrs or more... and nothing he posted made sense. The plane wasn't worth even half of what he was asking... and that was only what we could see in any pics... It's what was underneath everything that concerned me for any potential buyers.

He'd also posted threads about "not being able to sell the plane"... and was given several reasons why it didn't sell. When he didn't like what people were telling him, he'd go on the defensive.

That's an old SD Models Yak. The cowl was supposed to be attached with a cowl ring, glued inside the cowl, then the cowl ring was bolted to the firewall, from the backside. If I'm not mistaken, those tabs(top 2 pics) are a part of the where to cowl ring bolted on... and there's other tabs/points all around it somewhere, and they all bolted through the back into that cowl ring. When done right, that system probably worked good if kept tight with proper hardware and thread-locker.

Maybe the best thing would be just cut those joints as best you can, and if there's anything left of the original cowl ring, try to salvage it to make another one. It will be quite a bit of work possibly, but you might be able to bring it back close to original... which actually worked I believe.

Other then that, with that plane being an old SD Models, the company eventually turned into Pilot... which is now a pretty decent company with decent planes(my buddy just got a Pilot 330SC). If you need info, they may have some more for you.. not sure about it though.. that plane is pretty old.

Man I hope it works out for you though. You've got your hands full with it I'm sure. Good luck with it.

Cowl attachment !

Thank you all for your input, every little bit helps....... the piano hinge is another fix that help with the exhaust system removal and replacement.... It was a hand full of work and a bigger handful of $$$ but ,I did get it started today for the first time. It still needs some TLC but, I think It is as ready as it's going to get! Next week, weather pending, I'll take it out to the field for final tune-up and maybe a flight. The cowl will have to wait till I get some more patients and $$$ and time... I will up date in a few days Thanks again Paul V.

If that were mine I would cut the cowl ring completely loose from the cowling and create a new one from a fresh piece basswood plywood. Then I would bond in place with CA and glass inside. Next I would layout and drill new mounting holes and install locking 6/32"nutplates. Just out of curiosity, what is your all up weight on that bird?
