New 4 cycle gas engine.

Check out this new 4 cycle gas engine. Maybe a small compact one could be made to use in RC airplanes!!

I should have posted this in some engine conversion forum. It is a neat design in some ways. It does open up new ways to reduce 4 cycle moving parts. The parts it does have, are set-up to move a lot of air & fuel....making good power!

You need to look at his "drawings", there's no fewer moving parts than any other 4 stroke. You're right though, you should have posted it somewhere else, like maybe the antique engine site. The only reason it's "new", is because the design is asinine!

3 pistons, 3 con rods, 2 crankshafts for a single cylinder engine...what could possibly go wrong....

Ok - turn it upside down and what do you really have?

a Multi cylinder 2 stroke with different sized pistons (the ones that are called the valves) being supercharged by a reciprocating Supercharger running at twice the engine speed. There could be a very slight benefit from the fact the "Supercharger" piston is continuiing to compress when the firing commences but that benefit is probably more than lost due to the decompression occuring whilst the rest of the firing takes place.

Now if the "Single" (aka supercharger) side of it was actually driven by (and driving) a cam - it could be timed to negate the loss of volume whilst firing takes place.

I think it would have MANY stress challenges to overcome and many weight challenges to overcome before it would be even remotely viable

By his own web page figures - it produced a "Massive" amount of torque that equates to 23 Hp from 850cc's !! - WOW :tongueincheek:

But it did break the fiat crankshaft while doing it so it may very well be viable to a modelling groupo - as longa asa ita isa shiny.

So you guys are all saying this engine theory could not ever be completely gone over and work in a lot less part count and weight engine.....

Jody , you are right...I never seen the drawings...my bad.....

Cap'n kidding aside; It does not appear to be a practical design. Steve's thoughts are pretty much the case. As far as miniaturization; would be novelty at best. Best to you.

I'm not saying that at all - I'm just looking at it from a different perspective (It's what I do foir a living - I am trained and highly qualified to do it). Any design or concept can be gone over and most can be made to work. Whether or not they become marketable depends on many things. In this case is there really much difference in parts count?

For the "Valve" system
1 crankshaft
2 connecting rods
4 rod bearings
2 pistons
4 (or 6?) piston rings
piston pins & retention
Cylinder lubrication and scavenging
etc

Then there is
How to deal with engine wear and pressurinsation of the crankcase caused by that wear (blowby past the rings)
Overall engine "height" (external dimensions)
The reason that modern engines are multivalved (Reciprocating weight is lower and inlet / exhaust areas are larger - 2 "Piston valves" are a reduced flow area for inlet and exhaust)
Cost of production (including assembly)
Power to weight ratio
What oil system does it run? - If it is premixed, it could well be useful, if it is force fed - there are some complications to overcome
What cooling system? Air cooled may make it lighter
