Re: Bill Hempel 100cc Yak-55M?????

Maidened the Yak today which was a long time coming with 2 additional flights. Had a gusty 10-20mph crosswind with the wonderful turbulance 200' into both ends of the runway so either way you come in your doing your approach downwind. Made for exciting landings especially when this ended up being on the tail heavy side of tail heavy. Perfect for 3D but this is supposed to be my IMAC plane so some adjustments are in order.

Here is my set up:
- OS GT55 breathing down a K&S 86 Can on 11" pipes spinning a XOAR 22x8 for break-in and hoping it can handle a Vess 23B later on (eventually changing to a 3 bladed prop in a yet to be finalized size and pitch).
- Pete Model 3.5" CF spinner (possibly changing to an aluminum spinner for the needed nose weight).
- 1/2" standoffs bringing the spinner back plate to a scale looking 15/16" in front of the cowl.
- Break-in is 30:1 with Royal Purple TCW III and then changing to 50:1.
- Reconfigured the cowl so there is one opening in front of the engine head and added baffeling.
- Used the Fiji 16oz water bottle set up and love the weight savings and looks.
- Extended the can tunnel 2" because of the shorter standoffs.
- Can is held on with a K&S Vibra Mount at the far end and a custom cut carbon fiber mount holds the manifold in place.
- Attached a carb vent line routed to the center of the fuse for the lean inverted and knife edge flight issues which also allowed a top end gain of 300rpms measured before the second flight.
- Twin 1350mah batteries through a Smart Fly Super Reg powers the receiver and also powers the ignition using a WIKE Ignition Battery Eliminator. (Estimated 5 flights before recharging)
- Futaba Brushless BLS155 servos all around with a digital 3156 for throttle and stoled a carbon fiber pushrod off my one of my deceased foamies for throttle control.
- Pete Model CF tailwheel
- Used titanium threaded rod for all control horns, Hanger 9 swivel clevises, and titanium control rods.
- Mock scale brake lines and antena with a scale trim scheme (rethinking the pilot and instuments due to the CG).
- Dry weight came in at 17lbs 14.5lbs (even with the 8oz of dead lead I added to the end of the cowl last night after checking the CG).

Thank you Bill for such an outstanding airframe!

Got excited for a moment as mine came in at 17lbs 14.5oz and my imagination took off thinking I could solve my tail weight issues for an IMAC setup and shed a lot of weight to boot. Reality hit when I found the original weight and all hopes were dashed.

Congrats on the maiden ctnich. Your plane looks great. Where did you get the titanium threaded rod for your control horns? Do you have some pictures of them? I'm very interested because I was thinking of doing the same thing with the hope of loosing a little weight in the tail.

Looks great! Your friend has a very nice camera, judging from the picture quality.

That third one down is so clear and bright and colorful, it almost looks fake. Beautiful shots.
Thanks for posting them.

Thanks vwchad! I picked up the 8-32 24" TI rod at SmallParts.com part #B000FP0J7O for $32.63 shipped. McMasters has them also but at a higher price.

When I get home from work tonight I will take some pictures of the control post setup and post them for you.
