Help!
Glider Suggestions
I am looking to add a glider to my R/C airplane fleet.
The only glider I have flew was the Gentle Lady and the Sig Riser. I want to get into a more scale plane either build up or fiberglass with a T-Tail and possibly spoilers, retract, etc. The only requirement which may totally limit me is budget and I need it to be electric powered. I want to stay away from the foam planes. I would like to find something that is less than $700.... I like the look of the DG-1000 but I need a self launching flight system. |

you are probably better off going to rcgroups or rcaerotowing for guidance. $700 isn't going to get you much in the scale world - maybe a used 3m, which in scale is small, and small means heavy and flies fast. add a self launcher and you add a fair amount of weight. hangar 9 is coming out with a powered 4.7m ASW 20, but the finished price on that will probably be in the 2k range. I have a fully molded 4.3m ASW 27 with flaps, retracts and spoilers, and while 4.3m may seem large, it's one of the smaller gliders when I go to events. it would probably sell for around $1500 and has no self launcher.

May I suggest you take your $700 to a local glider club (if there is one) and ask what it takes to solo in a real glider. I like RC-Soaring but after 35 years of piloting my own ship and 2,700 h in the cockpit I can tell you nothing beats going up in a thermal and covering a couple hundred miles in a day. Give it a try!
