Something definitely needs to be done with Drones/quadcoptors outside of AMA sanctioned clubs. The problem is Joe public thinks it is just fun but is posing a serious problem. I know we are not nearly the only ones but our medical helicopters had to avoidances with one on 2 occasions this year. one was estimated at 50' away when it was seen and avoided.

One silly question, are our model airplanes being classified as drones as of today?

or, what is the AMA definition of a "DRONE"?

Is a model airplane considered a "drone" at the point of conception? No, seriously, is it?

I can see this coming. Since when does the government not get involved and go over the line??? It's a matter of time before our lovely government decides we need to register our planes and helis too. Of course, there WILL be fines and inspections involved. If anybody thinks they're not capable of doing just that, then you're not paying attention.

+1
And don't forget the fees that will go along with the inspections and registration.

Although it will probably end in a mess, this could be a good thing. Something tells me it won't be though

Registering a drone won't inhibit some jack___ from flying it over a bunch of cars in a busy intersection. On second thought, it will end in a mess. It will just give "dronies" reason to be more "outlaw" drone flyers.

Will we soon have "drone runners" much like gun runners? I can see it now, a cop stops a motorist and opens the trunk and it is full of drones and bags of cash!

um, guys... keep in mind that RC airplanes and helis are also "drones" within the context of everything ever said on the topic of regulation. the rules have never mentioned it being contingent of autonomy or method of lift...

No one ever answered my question. SO do you know? Are model airplanes, in the eye of AMA considered "Drones"?

and,

are model airplanes, in the eyes of the FAA, considered drones?

Drones are like guns. Make them illegal, and only the criminals will have them.

There is no way they are going to require us to register our RC aircraft. The FAA has enough to deal with on the manned side I feel. If you want to make money using UAVs I can understand that being registered.

Don't see how a word that it's originally meaning meant an auto vehicle that was used once got turned into our RC aircraft

do you guys honestly think logic and personal rights will stop this administration??? C'mon fellas. They can't confiscate all of our guns either, but just you watch, they're going to try. Bottom line is, when SOMEBODY in DC finds out how many people fly and how many planes and helis are out there, they're going to see dollar signs. Can they enforce it??? No. BUT, they know that a majority of us are honest, law-abiding people and will probably trundle in and pay to stay legal. That's a lot of coin. Heck, I have 6 planes, 11 helis and 3 quads. I'm sure a lot of you guys have bigger fleets than I do. Do the math, because somebody in DC is bound to. Why do you think they're trying to get this in place before Christmas??? They're expecting sales of quads to hit 1 million this Christmas alone.
