Memorial Day Impromptu Fun-Fly Get Together

From Jenni and Greg:

  • When - 05/25/2017 - 05/29/2017
  • Where - Muncie, IN - Site: AMA HQ, Site 3

Fly what you bring!

Open to all RC aircraft whether gas, electric, or turbine, heli, airplane, or multirotor.

Remembering Big D

This will be an AMA sanctioned event this year, which means that pilots will need to register to fly. In honor of Darrell "Big D" Bell, the $30 pilot fee will completely go toward an AMA Commemorative Walk of Fame brick in his memory; we are hoping to receive enough contributions from those who knew and loved him to be able to purchase the large granite brick for $1,000, or the smaller brick etched in gold for $500.

That money then goes toward the AMA Foundation. All contributors will be recognized as donors in Model Aviation magazine. Any additional money left after the brick is purchased will be donated to Camp AMA, since at least four of D's "nephews" have helped or instructed the youth since its beginning. That money will help with equipment and supplies or any other necessities they need for the camp to run. D loved seeing the youth come up in the hobby.

Everything else about the event will stay the same as it has in the past. It's all about lots of flying and being with great friends! This is just our way of honoring our "bigger-than-life" brother, uncle, and friend. D always came down to fly with us Memorial Day weekend and eat great food, and we loved having him there.

Camping

  • Camping is available at Site 3; just make sure to register at HQ or the museum.
  • If you need info about hotels click this link (we recommend the downtown Marriott).
  • We'll have the pitch-in pulled pork dinner on Saturday night as we have the past few years.
  • We'll supply the pork and tableware; just bring your own drinks and a dish or goodie to share if you are able!

Can't Attend? You Can Still Donate!

If you can't attend, but would like to donate to Darrell's brick, contact Greg at his email. Only cash, check, or PayPal friends and family (Greg will provide info for this later). We want to avoid processing fees so that all money goes to the brick and Camp AMA; I will be keeping a log of all donations and names attributed and all money will be kept separate from our own personal accounts. Any extra costs will be covered by us (such as food, sanctioning fee, etc.)

Big D Plane Auction

Darrell's estate has donated his NIB 3DHS 75" Edge that was one of 6 that Noll Smith had made for Pulse Battery Reps a couple of years ago. Darrell never got around to building his and his family has graciously donated it to our event to raffle off.

Darrell was so well known in the Hobby that other manufactures after finding out about the raffle wanted to help out. Thanks to the following companies, we now have a COMPLETE combo to raffle off to one winner at the event!

Extreme Flight: 30cc Electric Motor (12S) Castle Creations: Talon 120 HV ESC Horizon Hobby: Spektrum DX8/ 8010T XPert Servos: (4) XPert A2 Servos Falcon Propellors: 20x8 Electric Prop Pulse Batteries: (2) 3700mAh 6S packs

Craig Greening, Clint Akins Castle Creations, Stephen Thomas, Willie Chung, Chris Hinson, Sam MinhQuoc Le , we can't thank you enough for your generosity with the donations for this raffle!

Tickets will be available at the "Get Together" this weekend, $5 for 1 and $10 for 3.

Thank you, Jim! Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at jennifer@modelaircraft.org or Greg at greg7140@gmail.com.

This started out several years ago just as friends getting together at AMA to fly during the Memorial Day weekend. Big D would come down every year with his best friends and just relax and fly and we always had a pitch-in pulled pork dinner on Saturday evening. There's never been anything scheduled, and no agenda; everything was "Impromptu"--show up and fly and enjoy the friendship and fellowship. Two years ago, we even merged our wedding party reception in with it, with a small airshow from Frank Noll and Joe Smith for our family and friends who have never been around the hobby. (okay, so we did schedule something one time ... lol)

This will most likely be the only year that we sanction it and ask for any kind of donations for a brick or Camp AMA; it will go back to its regularly scheduled programming next year. But we wanted to do something to honor Big D since he loved coming here every year.

Big D's mom, Mama Mary Hunter, and sister, Velda, will also be here on Saturday to help celebrate.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Greg and I send our most appreciative thanks to everyone who came to our Big D Memorial Day Impromptu Fun Fly. I think everyone had a really great time, especially on Saturday! There were even a few die-hards who stayed all the way through Monday!

We had a total of 38 registered pilots and (on first count) raised close to $2,500! $1,000 of that will go toward Big D's brick, while the rest will be split between Camp AMA and the Ryan Sherrow scholarship fund, which was created in the memory of a young AMA member who passed away.

If anyone would still like to donate, please let us know no later than the end of the day Wednesday, May 31. I'd like to turn in the money to Education and the AMA Foundation by Friday or next Monday. We will still accept by PayPal (send Friends and Family) to greg7140@gmail.com, or by cash or check addressed to Greg at PO Box 5, Oakville, IN 47367. If you send by USPS mail, just email Greg a quick note at the above email to let him know it's on its way.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, as well as Big D's mom's and sister's. They were so grateful for all of our generosity. This is why we are one big family--we help each other out when it's needed or wanted.

Although we will not be taking donations next year, plan on spending your Memorial Day at AMA with us again for a relaxed, no-agenda, fly-what-you-bring weekend full of friends!

I've posted my photos to my Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...1&l=c7ae2f058d.

Casie Dussia took quite a few photos and will be doing a wrap-up of our event here on Flying Giants very soon!
