Thanks! It is going to be very visible for me! Primo has sanded her down and will be putting on the white primer/sealer next. He did a tape layout of the wing and front of the fuselage and we had a
lively discussion regarding changes and options. I must say that Primo practiced a lot of patience in dealing with my likes/dislikes and we ended up concurring on a final layout. W |

Meanwhile, at home...the turbine came in safely by FEDEX and the second to last piece of the puzzle is waiting to be installed.
I tackled the plate where all the displays, PowerBox Mercury, GPS Sensor II, the Electron GS200 and the KT ECU will be housed. I first did a layout on the 8¼" x 12" ply of where I wanted everything placed. I next penciled in the exact positions of everything and then drilled the holes using a Forstner bit (to get clean holes without shredding the underside of the ply). I also screwed down each unit so that I could punch the carbon fiber wrap (from below) with a needle so that the units would be re-located exactly where they were originally placed. The wrap was not hard to install at all and will add a nice finish to match all the new carbon fiber formers which comes on this second generation Leonardo. W |

Sorry for the delay in answering.... Primo is the SE Regional Director for IMAC and he's a good friend who is painting the Leo for me. He has had to fit the job between his work, family and practice, so it's going along at a pace that he can work with. He has finished the priming and has started taping out the color boundaries. The Leo's fuselage has curves on the sides for air-flow and lift so he has taken time to get the lines right. From what I've seen, I'm going to be really happy with the end result.
In the meantime, I've developed my skills at making the wire extensions using the PowerBox servo wires. The actual crimping of the male/female servo connectors was a daunting task when I started, but under the guidance of Tony Jacobs and also the video done by Martin Pickering gave me a head start. It really was only through practicing and developing my own technique that I felt the confidence in the finished product. Initially, I never felt that I could do it myself. However, I'm crimping like there is no tomorrow...and setting up the extensions/connections for the Electron L/Gear has opened new learning and patience. I actually inspect each crimp with a magnifying glass to make sure it was done correctly.....& I haven't screwed up....up to now!! When I sent in my PowerBox Mercury for a check-up, Adam (Strong) re-flashed the unit with the Version 8 software. The unit originally had Version 7. In doing so, my previous set-up was erased, so I will be going through the entire procedure from scratch and this will cement how it all works, so that if I'm asked for help (and I have) I can explain the nitty gritty details. I looked this morning and saw that this thread was started a full year ago... With almost 44,000 views in one year, it rivals all my previous threads on assembling the Extreme Flight Extra 300 and also the CompArf Yak55SP W |

True! There are some notable young and extremely proficient 3D & aerobatics pilots who have ventured into jets also.
Pictured below are Jase Dussia & Kal Reifsnyder (Photos courtesy of Andrew Griffiths: Barracuda Hockey ) and Santiago Perez unwrapping his new FUTURA. These young men are making waves in the jet world and it shows that there is a "draw" into this facet of model aviation!! |

Watching Jase ripping on that Havoc GTS gives me plenty of faith that nothing I can do to mine short of hitting something will break it.

I hope that Kal and/or Jase can make it with jets to the Triple Tree Youth Masters in SC at the end of July!! Looking forward to seeing you there again. THANKS for all you do with the prep of the planes for the youngsters. Also, thanks for the stuff from Dreamworks, they came in and I can now finish the L/Gear extensions with the snakeskin. Looking forward to seeing you also at the Jet Precision NATS if you can make it. Maybe in the future, we can also introduce jets to the Youth Masters!! I think it would go down well there..... Hmmmmm..... Maybe we should talk to some of the EDF manufacturers about sponsorship! |
