ZDZ 195 vs GP 178

Would love to here your experiences with either, along with comments on build quality. And some specs would be nice. ie. weight, rpm, life span, etc.

I own a ZDZ180... predecessor to the 195. Awesome engine. Swings a 33x8W for 3D. Same prop class as a 4cylinder 200+ cc engine at a much lower weight. A true beast. That being said, I think your real “difference” of those two would be whether you want a rear induction carb or “traditional”. That’s the huge difference in my book. Must make a huge hole in the firewall for the rear carb along with a choke on servo typically. If that doesn’t bother you, then it’s just a personal brand preference to me. Specs can be looked up via google.

I am considering a GP178 as well though so I’m interested. . Already have a smattering of DAs and GPs in my hangar and all perform well.

Thanks mad. But as far as specs go, was looking for end user results.

Been running the 180 about a good 3 1/2yrs and I finally wore out the rotary valve. It was a simply remove and replace. Since the carb was off rebuilt that too. Still runs great like always. The 195 I have here runs just like the 180,,, maybe a wee bit better. Both are swinging the falcon 32x11W with authority,,, never had a GP engine so not able to say much about those. You will need to be a little more creative setting up the ZDZ throttle and choke servos vise a bottom feeder, engine

forgot to say,,, tune for the sky and not the ground rpm thing,,, you'll know when your engine is having issues as you listen to it while flying

My GP 178 swings a Falcon 30-14 very well on my Cardon pro and seems like a
worthy motor. Everything similar in set up dimension to a DA. Outstanding idle
but needed the screws turned in a lot from factory. Multiple upline elements and this
engine just keeps a strong upline on Jtec pipes. Start it with a chicken stick at first...
Mine had a faulty ignition with severe kick back. the new ignition works great.

Anyone have rpm numbers for the prop you are running. I am considering this engine to replace a DA 170 that swings a Falcon 31x10 wide at 5670

As not only a dealer but an end user of GP from the very beginning I can say the 178 is the smoothest of its class Iíve ever flown. I run both of mine on my Pro Flow 3-D Canisters and it throws my 44 lb Pilot 300 around like a rag doll.

Happy Holidays!
