Got a 55 dle that I am in the process of rebuilding, what gasket sealer do you use for the back of the crankcase and the cylinder??

Preferred is an O ring in a groove.

On cylinder base gaskets, I prefer no sealer at all and install the gasket on clean, dry surfaces. On some engines with narrow mating surfaces, sealer can cause the gasket to push out or migrate over time. Some engine companies have had to resort to blasted surfaces or rough mill cuts rather than smooth machined surfaces to retain gaskets in place. Not a problem on most engines these days.

For mating surfaces between crankcase halves that don't use a gasket, there are many choices. I prefer the anaerobic sealers over the silicone based ones as they seem to seal better over a long period of time. Yamabond and Hondabond are two common ones used or their products and there are specific numbers in each product line for case mating. Permatex, Loctite and other common sealer brands all offer products for case mating surfaces. I have even seen some people use a light coat of filled epoxy (such as JB Weld) for case mating and with good success. A bit tough to disassemble when the time comes though! A case sealer is probably better.

For bearing mounting, I prefer one of the green bearing mount products offered by Permatex, Loctite, etc. I suggest green over one of the red products because the green products will continue to wick between the bearing race and the case / shaft after assembly where the red products pretty much stay put and won't fill any voids that aren't coated prior to assembly. The green products also seem to withstand assembly with heat better than the red ones.

I don't recommend any specific product numbers because there are so many opinions on what is best for specific applications. Recommending a specific sealer is a bit like starting an oil thread .... not much good comes from it. If a guy wants to work on his own engine, he is smart enough to read the product spec sheets and pick a product that will work for the application. Just about every spec sheet you could want is readily available on line. My only intent here is to add a few of my personal observations.

I would really appreciate your recommendation on what Crankcase sealant you would use. I am assembling a 3W 220 and the 3W dealer told me what 3W uses , Reinzosil, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a better product out there.

The Reinzosil is a silicone based material. I wondering if like you mentioned if an anaerobic product like Loctite 518 which is specialized for Aluminum would be better than the Reinzosil 300.

The sealant is for sealing the split crankcase. There they use the Black Reinzosil 300. They use the clear 200 on the cylinder gaskets. I think I agree with you that the 200 which is a silicone as well would be kinda slippery and allow the cylinder gaskets to move over time like you said.

Do you guys recommend a sealer with a muffler gasket, or just the gasket dry...?
I have seen a video that recommends hi temp red RTV sealant on the metal faces (let dry) and then add gasket. Retighten when engine is hot.


Does this sound better than just dry gaskets?

Permatex Aviation sealant its a non drying sealant used it on my 30cc Case, Works great.

Same here. Ultra Copper for the win. I even use it for thread locker on muffler bolts. Never had one come loose.

When Fujibond or Hondabond are not available, I use this, it's pretty similar and it dries much harder than ultra copper. I used this stuff for sealing the crank case halves on my Subaru EJ25 engine. For those that know subaru engines, there is no gasket between the crank case halves, it's sealed by Fujibond. Never had one leak.
