Futaba S9156 ???

Anyone know why the Futaba info states "Ni-cad only" for this servo?
Seems like a good servo with 300 ish torque at 6v, but not sure why that is stated.

I notice many brands say "no dry battery use" but not sure about this one to use on electric with a ESC/BEC at 6 volts.

Futaba has had that line in their higher performance servo instructions for at least 20 years now. What they are wanting is for the user to use the servo with a battery capable of supplying the servo's power requirements. With modern Lixx batteries in widespread use these days, this statement really doesn't apply any more. Use good modern batteries and no problems.

Edit: the 9156 is not a HV rated servo so you would be limited to LiFe batteries. I like Futaba stuff but I'm thinking there are probably many other HV compatible servos around these days with similar or better ratings. The 9156 might be getting a bit dated.

Ditto! The 9156 is an excellent servo which I used with lipos for years!

I bought some 9177s cause I wanted Futaba, but will try the 9156 on an upcoming conversion of an older plane to electric.

Thanks for the responses.

Yep, older servo. All Futaba is trying to say is make sure the servo gets the power it needs. I've used that servo with 2S LiFe packs with great results. Using a lipo I might regulate it to 6.5 volts or so.

I never indicated it was a bad servo, just that it was getting a bit dated and there are many other choices these days. Better ratings and brushless are available in the 9156 price range.

I have lots of good, older Futaba digital servos that fall into that dated category and I still fly them. But I'd never replace them with the same servo even if they were still available.
