Turboprop Engine Testing Video

Warbird Mitchell wanted to test out his JetCentral Turboprop engine to see what RPM's the system would provide. He's got a Mejzlik 24x12 prop on it and he got 6200 rpm's at full throttle. That's great data for him, but for me, it's just cool to see the engine out in the open on a test stand running up. You don't get to see these everyday and they are mostly hidden away in airplane fuselages. It's nice to see the exposed engine doing it's thing. The darker video showing the exhausts heating up and some fire is pretty sweet icing on the cake too.

If you don't know how a turboprop works, here's an explanation from Wikipedia. "Air is drawn into the intake and compressed by the compressor. Fuel is then added to the compressed air in the combustor, where the fuel-air mixture then combusts. The hot combustion gases expand through the turbine. Some of the power generated by the turbine is used to drive the compressor. The rest is transmitted through the reduction gearing to the propeller."

Sit back and enjoy the video. What airplane would you put a turboprop in if you had the chance?

The tip of the spinner has a slight wobble. Maybe they all do ,just easier to see running slower.

Nice plus an onboard electric stater too. I could see one on a Turbo Raven aerobatic plane.

Yes there’s a gearbox….otherwise the prop would be supersonic

Depending on the size….smaller are faster ect…..a 60 size motor part would spin around 140,000rpm and the prop around 7000’ish in the air….

Well unlike combustion engine, the turbo prop make there’s power at really high rpm….and gearbox are presently build for around 7000 rpm max…..it’s a small market as well, the one showed in the video is no longer available

And making a high speed gearbox would have to be done by some else then the factory….
