Giant Scale RC Midair Crash

This week on What the Heck Wednesday we have a video from the Weston Park International RC Model Aircraft Show that took place on the first weekend of September. These guys were putting on a great show for the crowd with 9 or 10 Giant Scale gas planes flying together. The video starts out showing the planes in a vertical climb and then diving to make a knife edge pass down the runway at show center. One plane gets real wonky and manages to nail another plane causing some serious damage and excitement. The plane that got hit managed to fly it out, but the offending plane took a digger and suffered for it. Another unlucky pilot flying just behind the crash went in full knife edge for no apparent reason I can see other than he got distracted by the midair.

There's a lot going on in this video and the creator shows us various zoomed in angles in slow motion to get a better idea of what all went down. I'm not really sure what happened to start the whole string of events. Was it wake turbulence? Pilot error? Parts failure? or something else? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

If you have a video of a weird or entertaining crash and would like to be featured on What the Heck Wednesday, please send me a PM with your submission.

So pilot error?

Edge 540 Downline KE to catch up was inline with another plane
Adjusted downline with elevator to avoid mid air

High rates at high speed caused an over correction along with some speed induced KE coupling
Edge wing Bumped into the MXS empennage thus resulting in the Edge to meet it's end.

The Pilot Slick however was flying it's own line, and decided to move around the kaos and met the ground. I don't see it being hit by anything... I think this one should have leveled off and gone around.

Crashing is just part of the hobby when having fun sometimes.

Totally agree. The Edge overcorrected and got out of shape avoiding the other plane -- you can see lots of elevator. The Slick maybe got distracted by everything and just flew'er in..

Great video!

To each their own, I suppose. From my perspective, there couldn’t be a more pointless waste of good aircraft. I guess after a while in any endeavor, people just get bored.

Agree for the most part with your assessment. Except that I think the Edge hits the fuselage of the MXS flat and breaks away... didn't hit the empennage.

The Slick just got spooked and crashed on its own.

What REALLY caught my eye was the friendly and nonchalant attitude of all parties involved. In most other places (the Americas North and South ) a shouting match would ensue followed by finger pointing and blaming, followed by reparations requested..... LOL

Possibly the person that originally got wonky was not comfortable doing K.E. In that direction? Anyway, definitely too bad for those people that lost aircraft!

That is absolutely, in no way shape or form, not true or how it works. At all...
