Vinnie's Carden 260 Build!

I have had my 260 kit for a couple weeks now, and am finally getting to the point where parts are going together. I spent a lot of time on building the table and getting tools together. Also testing amounts of Gorilla Glue for sheeting. No more excuses, time to start.

I am posting some pictures and thoughts on this here because this is where I learned most of what I know about building giant scale. This is my first kit build this size. My only other building experience is 40 size kits and giant scale ARF assembly. The fact that I feel confident to start this after researching here on FG really says a lot for the expereinced guys here. Hopefully someone will learn from my thread as well.. even if from my mistakes?!?

I just talked to Walt of BBW fame, and he set me straight on MANY different issues I was worried about for my first Carden build. Some I didn't even know I was worried about until he told me, but I am glad he did. He is a true example for others in this hobby, and really made me feel more confident about starting this. Thanks Walt!!

This is the 40% 260. I am using a DA 150 with MTW. JR 8611s on everything but rudder 2 8711s and throttle 1 8411. I hope for 37 pounds on this plane.. I may use carbon gear or wing tube for this, I will see where she is once finished.

I am getting ready to sheet everything first. Thanks again Walt for all the info.

Re: Vinnie's Carden 260 Build!

Oh, I forgot to mention, my shop is 9'x12'. It was the side porch when we got the house. My wife cinvinced me it would be a good shop until we have a garage, so I framed it in, added windows, and put some outlets in. (I am a carpenter by trade). This could be a record for smallest shop to give birth to a 40%. Setting the incidence should be exciting.

This is the table I built for this project. Dennis told me this is the minimum size table to build this plane on. 3\4"x10" MDF stringers spaced 16" on center, (6) 2x6 legs with adjustable feet, and 29"x80" double 3\4" MDF top. I checked the top with dental floss stretched over the top on spacers, and over 80 inches it is not off more than 1\32". I am still going to test for deflection with the full 500 pounds on the wings with a dry run before glueing them. I added 3\4" plywood runners on the sides with a lot of screws in hopes to stop deflection as well. The dreaded weight is lurking under the table. I got these for free from a customer who had it in his basement left over from the original house construction.

Very nice, I love build threads. I swear one day I will build a plane that is worthy of a build thread.
You're not going to paint the cowl and pants with those brushes hanging on the wall are you?

Look in the top left of picture 3. The paint brushes are to make the money to buy the paint for the plane.

Looks good Vinnie. I'll be following this thread closely. I'm just starting on a Carden 35% 260 build. My first...........although I've built quite a few smaller kits over the years. I've been reading every build thread I can find and will be adding your's to the list. I like the templates you made for cutting out your servo mount holes.

Re: Vinnie's Carden 260 Build!

Jim, thanks for checking in. I also read as many Carden threads as I could in the months leading up to this. I spent a little time with the scrap foam that comes with the kits making the templates for the servo cutouts. With careful adjusting, I was able to get a nice, snug fit for the servo rails. You need to undersize that one a bit, as the foam is melted further than the wire as you pass through with the heat on.

35% 260? Have you seen this one: https://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/...ld-carden.html
This guy did us a great service with his careful building documented in extreme detail.
