Sneak Peek.. My New Design

So yeah.. I've decided to come back to competition flying for 2011, and have also decided I don't want to fly the same old thing everyone else and their brother has.. So I'm designing my own. It's no secret I've ALWAYS loved the Giles aircraft, and since the MX Aircraft are the spiritual successors.. here's my new project. Working on the construction drawings now but I've got the force arrangement I want. The fuse is stretched just a bit to give it better precision flying qualities, and the stab has been lowered slightly.

40% MX-S. I haven't decided if I'm going to do the R or standard S cowl and wingtips or not yet.
Span - 118"
Length - 112" (including spinner)
Area - 2486"

Looks like a nice start! Do you have any plans to release your design? Or is this just a one off?

I have no idea. A lot will depend upon how well it flies and such. If I'm happy with it, I'd probably sell plans or something, unless someone reputable wanted to kit it really badly.. heh.

And yeah Tony.. I love the MX stuff.. I just wish I could afford a real one. I'm going to cover this one like Rory Moore's airplane. Love that green and black.

I may be interested in a set of plans! Ever since the MX2 came out, I've wanted to build one from kit or plans...(preferably plans)

Yep.. Goshawk.. 1100 pounds, 350hp, BIG rudder, both wings were swept like the Weeks' airplanes. I wonder if Rory is still here in San Diego?

Haven't seen Rory since the late 80's. I remember his plane well....we were both flying unlimited IAC then. Nice bipe.

After looking at the pics more, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and make the newer pressure cowl.. A lot more work involved, but visually it's more interesting.

Yep. It'd be MUCH easier to do the old style cowl, but the newest MX-Ss have the newer racing pressure cowl, so that's what I'll do.

Progress continues.

If construction reminds you of Carden designs.. that's not by accident. I've known Dennis and flown his designs for a lot of years and I trust his construction methods to produce light, stiff, and straight airframes. There's a reason there are Carden airplanes out there with literally 1000+ flights on them. You won't see that from today's ARF airplanes generally.

And yet some more. This thing is really shaping up nicely I think. Still working on the CNC cut motor box parts, but it's coming along. Ideally I'll have different parts for this drawn up depending upon the muffler/pipe setup I use. Right now I'm looking at a DA-150/RE-3 combo.
