IMAC Contests Low attendance What's up?

Hey Guys,

I was noticing the amount of less participation at IMAC events, even the Nats had a low attendance. Besides the economy with I know plays a roll. What are the other factors that are in play with everyone and what positive suggestions for the CD's to get attendance up for 2012.

i was planning on makeing alot of contest this yr. but weather and lack of practice has been my issue. i think i only flew my new plane 2 or 3 times to try and trim it before the memorial day contest. didn't go just because i really didn't know the plane or the sequence. next yr i hope to make a come back and hit more contest. economy hasn't been a big issue with me. thankfully. my wife and i are planning on building another home in a yr or two so that will take priority over imac also. we do almost all the work.

ex300sc...
I think the turnout in the SE has been great... we have had several FL contests with over 30 pilots each..
a couple close to 40...
The North Georgia IMAC had 45...
really exciting competition here in the SE....

which class are you flying in?

Before anyone says Low attendance is because of the economy and gas prices consider this.....

I just got home from a week at the Soaring Nats.
39 competitors in Hand Launch
115 competitors in Thermal Duration.
Over 50 in F3J

I talked to people from all over the country who made the trip to Muncie last week.

IMHO, I think there's an element of frustration on the part of pilots not getting enough air time. CDs haven't been stressing the time limits and managing the flightlines. There's only so many times a pilot is willing to drive several hours to fly 4 times (three knowns and one unknown) in a weekend. Heck I can do that much flying at my home field in less than an hour. Lack of commitment from the competitors to understand the judging criteria, and arguments over the same are also driving otherwise good flyers into other aspects of the hobby.

In the NC Region the weather has really hurt the local contests. At first it was rain and wind all spring. No one could get in much pratice. Now it seems the heat is hurting the turnout. I think (hope) the turnouts will be a lot better the rest of the season.

I also agree with bkdavy on the fact that we are not getting enough rounds in on a 2 day contest.

i'm still a newbie at IMAC and my plan was to hit 4-5 contests this season. Due to family commitments that may be whittled down to 2....but hey, that's 2 more than I did last year

I remember lots of NC contests where 30+ people waited out rain on the field.
I also remember lots of contests where 30-40 people would show up for a weekend when the forecast was for horrible weather.

Its not the weather...

glider pilots are different than Imac pilots.
One group is more intense than the other.

IMHO, everything cycles up and down. Stay in IMAC long enough and you will see it, for that matter the whole hobby is that way.

Not sure which one is more "intense" but when I flew IMAC I thought attendance was down in 2010.
Its even worse from what I see in 2011 looking at contest results.

Its not that way in other segments of RC.
You gotta ask yourself why...

My thoughts as to why IMAC is losing ground with people...

Pay to Play
Judging and Bias
Rules
Gearing IMAC towards upper classes not the lower ones.
