70cc Viper 270 scratch build

Well, it's about that time again (at least for those of us that have real Winter).....building season.

So, last week I was doing a little inventory of the projects I have lined up for the Winter and thinking about this new DA70. I have a 70 coming for an ARF assembly, and thought maybe it would be cool to have something of this size custom built for this engine. Something with foam core wings to fly more crisp and solid than an ARF, yet fairly light weight (but not too light) with gobs of wing area, authoritative control surfaces and clean lines.

So, here is what I came up with during the week. Since it's going to be an aerobatic plane, just like every other carbon copy aerobatic plane.....I took all my favorite attributes from other planes and incorporated them into this design!
I decided to call it the "Viper 270" Viper...because hey it's a cool name, and 270 stands for the twin 70cc engine it's designed for.

Specs:
- 93"+/- wingspan
- 35"+/- tailspan
- 92" long NIC spinner
- 1658 Sq. In. area
- Edge 540 Cowl
- Extra 260 Canopy
- Extra 300 wing
- Edge 540 Stabs
- MXS Rudder
- Foam core balsa sheeted
- Laser cut light ply, birch and other goodies
- Carbon, carbon, carbon....and some texalium.
- Oh, and wheel Spats!! Under strict royalty guidelines and permission from "SPATS" himself.

For anyone that followed my 37% MX build, I am also going to be building V2.0 of that plane in this same thread, so you will see that in the background of pics as I go. Once that plane is ready for covering I'll finish it on that thread. The MX got extensive revisions, and is all cut and ready to go. I'm hoping to laser cut the Viper this weekend or early next week. Still have a few parts to draw....

Done yet?!

Here's a thought on ailerons. Nobody has yet to copy the full scale Extra 330SC ailerons, which have a larger chord at the tips than they do at the roots (not including the aerodynamic counter balances).

Wished Krill would've done it on their's . Anyway...just a thought and looking forward to another creation Terry.

No, sorry actually quite the opposite. I have 7.4375 at the root and 3.375" at the tip with 213sq of aileron per wing. For authority during post stall 3D and nice deep snaps. Ailerons will also have double servos to eliminate blowback on high speed snaps Basically other than outlines, there is nothing scale about this plane. Designed mainly for 3D but also hoping to be able to fly clean lines when tamed down.

Nice new avatar! I suppose you're about ready to get back to building / painting soon?

Awesome. I like that you are building a "small" one around the 70. This thing will be fun.

He's my new pilot in my 42% Raven...."Cap't Jack Raven".....Aaarrr!!!

Yeah....as soon as the eastern regional IMAC World Qualifier is over next weekend. I already promised my wife I'd get back to some painting (artwork) and get back into the Krill.

Oh....no prob on the ailerons. Just wishing someone would try it out on an big RC aerobat.

Hey Terry, you should change from the edge 540 cowl to a Cap 232 cowl. Nothing like them cheeks. Sorry I had to, just got a soft spot for the looks of the Cap that's all.

Thanks for the idea, but nope....scale Edge 540 cowl is all kinds of sexy on the nose of an airplane (one of my favorites). Most Edges on the market look nothing like a scale Edge other than Extreme Flight and the new PAU's are very close as well. I found one from a 10+ year old kit that I can have made for me. Funny how the "old" 35% kits fit 30%+/- planes with modern technology and components I've got one in hand that is kinda crappy and the fresh one is due in a week or so. Just marked out foam, going to play with some laser stuff in the AM and cut foam tomorrow afternoon Got word that wing tubes and sockets shipped from TNT today and shiny new DA70's are on there way here from DA!
