Build Log
Top Flite 1/5 P-51 ARF Tuskegee Airmen

Well since I had an accident with my kit built P-51 in Tuskegee colors, I wanted to replace it but decided to go with the ARF which will make like easier and the plane lighter (plus I am not a kit builder).

I got a Top Flite 1/5 P-51 ARF which I have already stripped down and plan on glassing and painting to look like this one:

The only problem is that the Tuskegee Mustang is a P-51B while the Top Flite is a P-51D so it won't be absolutely scale.

I will be using the following to build my P-51:

1) Top Flite 1/5 P-51D ARF
2) Glassing with .73oz Fiber Cloth from APC
3) DA50 with Scale Keleo Exhaust (Wow these exhaust are nice... but expensive)
4) JR 8611 Servos. It's what I have in stock and realize it's over kill so this might change.
5) Tech Aero Ibec
6) McFueler Fuel Dot
7) Lusterkote Paint for all surfaces.
8) Robart Retracts and Scale Wheels
9) Smart Fly Super Reg with 2 x 2500mah Lipos (might switch to re-lions depending on weight needs)

This is my first time glassing/painting a plane and I am following a guide I found online which seems to be very good. http://www.airfieldmodels.com/inform...rglass_finish/

I will be using Z-Poxy Finishing resin but have not decided if I need to thin it out or not.

Only thing I have done so far is take off all the monokote and start wiring the air lines and servo lines (only because I dont want to forget and then make it more difficult once the wing is fully assembled.

I would like to add lights to this P-51 but I am not sure if there is a kit I could buy to do so? Realizing this is the ARF it probably is a bit too much trouble. It's not critical that I get lights but if someone has some tips please let me know.

This will be a slow build as I am very busy with work but I hope to update it at least once a week!

Now are you gonna convert this to a B model with the TopFlite conversion kit?

I'm guessing he either stripped an ARF or he bought the ARC version if it's still available.

Cool, I'm doing a P-47 soon but saving it for my last build / assembly of the Winter / spring. I like those scale wheels.....just have not talked myself into the $$ yet I got the ARF as well, but I'm only doing a partial strip and recover but a buck naked redo like you are!! Can't wait to see it come together.

some of the Tuskegee Mustangs were P-51D's so you will be fine.
Also I would assume if you are willing to cut into the plan a little your would be able to make the conversion Top Flite sells for the kit work on the ARF.

I am going to look into the kit to convert into the b model and see how much work it would be. Thanks for the info.

Leo Spychalla has a fiberglass turtle deck for converting the TF P-51 into a B model.
I had one and was really impressed with the glass work and quality.
Check it out, since you've already to glass your airframe.

Dave,

The picture I see it seems that is an ARF correct? If it is, that is PERFECT! I already contacted Leo on RCU, waiting on his reply. Do you have his email by any chance?

Thanks,

Pedro

Some progress.

I measured/wired servos (will be pulling them out anyway) and joined the wing. Tomorrow I plan on measuring and cutting the fiberglass and maybe cover the top of the wing. Still a bit scared as I have never fiber glassed before.

I contacted the person Dave mentioned to see if I can get a B conversion, it seems the one in the picture is an ARF (not mine) so if it is... I will be converting mine too
